Google Launches Gemini CLI for AI Integration in Development

Google has introduced Gemini CLI, a free, open-source AI tool that works directly in developers’ terminals. This initiative allows coders to leverage the capabilities of Gemini efficiently and natively through the command line interface.

Google’s Gemini

The Gemini CLI is based on the advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro model, which includes a remarkable 1 million-token context window—enabling the analysis of extensive codebases and documents. Available under the Apache 2.0 license, developers can freely inspect, modify, or expand the software.

This tool can read files, execute commands, modify scripts, and even access Google Search results in real time for context-sensitive tasks. Additionally, the agent is extensible via the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and supports integration with external tools and data sources.

High Usage Limits, No Cost for Individuals

Google is offering substantial usage limits for individual developers logging in with their personal Google accounts. They can access Gemini 2.5 Pro, making up to 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 daily requests at no extra cost.

For professionals needing more resources, there’s the option to integrate with AI Studio or Vertex AI, which have usage-based billing options.

A Week of Gemini Everywhere

The announcement of Gemini CLI comes alongside a series of Gemini-powered updates across Google’s suite of applications. Gemini functionalities are now embedded in Gmail, Docs, and Drive, assisting users in drafting emails, summarizing documents, and organizing files seamlessly.

Moreover, Google DeepMind recently announced Gemini Robotics On-Device, which allows the model to run locally on robots for quick task execution without relying on cloud access.

On the hardware side, Lenovo has released the Chromebook Plus 14 with integrated on-device Gemini AI. This innovation enhances everyday productivity with AI assistance.
