OpenAI to Allow ‘Sign in with ChatGPT’ Feature for Third-Party Apps
OpenAI is exploring ways for users to sign in to third-party apps using their ChatGPT account, as noted on a web page published recently. The company is currently gauging interest from developers who might want to integrate this service into their applications.
As ChatGPT rapidly grows to become one of the largest consumer applications globally—now boasting approximately 600 million monthly active users—OpenAI aims to expand into various consumer sectors, including online shopping, social media, and personal devices. The potential “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature could help the company compete with huge tech firms like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, all of which provide streamlined sign-in options for third-party applications.
Earlier this month, OpenAI launched a preview of the “Sign in with ChatGPT” experience for developers as part of Codex CLI, the company’s open-source AI coding tool for terminals. This feature enables developers to link their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their API accounts. In addition, OpenAI incentivized Plus users with $5 in API credits and Pro users with $50 in API credits for utilizing the sign-in option.
OpenAI appears keen on integrating this sign-in service across a wide array of companies. The developer interest form requests companies to specify their app’s user base, ranging from smaller entities with fewer than 1,000 weekly users to significant apps with over 100 million weekly users. Further, it inquires about how developers currently charge for AI features and whether they are OpenAI API customers.
CEO Sam Altman had mentioned in 2023 that the company might consider a “sign in with OpenAI” feature in 2024. However, it seems OpenAI is now taking more serious steps to develop this capability in 2025. The timeline for when the sign-in feature will become available for ChatGPT users or how many companies have expressed interest remains uncertain.
OpenAI has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding this new initiative.
